A Glossary of Locksmith Terms

Accurate Locksmith is an established, brick-and-mortar locksmith shop in Ramsey, New Jersey that has been serving the community for many years. When you come into our shop for a service or product, it is important that you know what you are looking for. While our experts can always make sure you come out with what you wanted, here is a list of some basic lock and locksmith terms that can make searching for keys, safes or keyless entries much easier.
  • Blade – the part of the key that goes into the door.
  • Bored Cylindrical Lock – the most common (standard) kind of residential lock.
  • Chamber – the holes where springs and pins must be pushed into the unlock position.
  • Control Key – the type of key used by a locksmith to remove the cylinder and re-key.
  • Cutting a Key – making a new key by cutting with lasers or machinery into an unused blade.
  • Deadbolt – a lock that is engaged through turning a knob.

Facts about Buying Safes

Ramsey Lock is the only brick-and-mortar locksmith shop in Bergen County and has been in business since 1963 helping customers with everything from key-cutting to lock installation throughout North Jersey. With the holiday season coming up, a safe is always an option to buy a family member or friend. Not ever safe is the same, so the expert safe dealers at Accurate Locksmith have outlined some pointers to help you know what to consider before this purchase.
  • Know what your safe is intended for – a fireproof safe might not necessarily prevent a burglary.
  • Don’t use a floor safe to protect you from a fire – although there are fireproof floor safes that can be installed onto the floor, these safes are primarily so that the contents can’t simply be stolen with the safe itself by being bolted to the floor. The best safes for fires need to be installed to a concrete surface.
  • The minimum fire safety rating for a safe to protect money or paper is a one hour fire rating.
  • Placing a safe is just as important as the kind of safe you pick. A safe should be somewhere where you are encouraged to use it, but not where it is in obvious view. There should be adequate lighting in the area that you can use the safe conveniently.

These tips are only a part of the different advantages to safes and how to pick the right one for your needs, but coming to the Accurate Locksmith storefront and speaking to an expert can help you make your selection the only one you need for life.

Cost of Car Key Replacement

Losing car keys is nothing new, it probably happened a day or two after someone purchased the first Model T. Any driver has had to replace their keys at one point or another. Prior to the 1990's this wasn't that big of a deal, you could go to any hardware store and get a new set of keys cut in 15 minutes. Because this was so easy though, it left many vehicles susceptible to theft. One early deterrent was simply two separate keys, one for the locks and one for the ignition. Since the 1990's auto-manufacturers have stepped up their key game and implemented more technologically advanced keys. With these advancements in technology came an increase in price for replacements, and made them harder to replace. This is a rundown of the keys that are now common in most mass manufactured cars.

Transponder Keys – These keys feature a standard looking key with a plastic head to it which housed a transponder microchip. This chip emits a signal to a receiver in the ignition to start, if the receiver detects the wrong signal the car will not start. Later manufacturers will incorporate a fob into these which includes doors unlocking/locking, remote start and trunk open. Most dealerships will charge you about $100-160 for the key and an additional $75 for the fob. Locksmiths will often charge you about $20-30 dollars less.

Laser-cut Keys – The appearance of laser-cut keys varies slightly from transponder keys. They are often thicker at the shank of the key and have a curvy appearance on the edge. These keys need to be cut with a very expensive machine and need to be 100% accurate making them harder to duplicate. Dealerships and high-quality locksmiths will have these machines available. Laser-cut key replacement can be expensive due to this and can run anywhere from $150-250.

Smart Keys – These are not actually keys in the traditional view you may have. They are a fobs that you either insert into a port, or in more advanced applications simply need to have in the car. The ignition starts with the press of a button. Because of these advanced systems and their recent introduction into the auto industry, it will cost you a trip to the dealership. Expect to pay anywhere between $220-400 for a replacement.

With the exception of smart keys, going to a locksmith to replace your keys can end up saving you a decent amount of money. But finding one that is professional and reputable is key, no pun intended. Accurate Locksmith is a company that specializes in the advanced technologies that auto-manufacturers have implemented over the years.

Facts about Motorcycle Theft

It’s not hard to believe that motorcycle thefts are a huge issue throughout America. Motorcycles lack most of the internal anti-theft mechanisms and technology that protects cars from those who wish to steal them, and aside from the key and some more expensive features preventing motorcycles from being stolen they can be an easy target.

The five most stolen motorcycle brands are:
  • Honda
  • Yamaha
  • Suzuki
  • Kawasaki
  • Harley-Davidson

These bikes are mostly stolen in the summer months, when riders are not locking them in the garage or leaving them covered up from the prying eyes of thieves.

Here are a few ways you can prevent motorcycle theft:
  • Lock your ignition. You can also have a motorcycle keylocksmith in NJ speak with you about installing motorcycle alarms on your ignition system.
  • Lock the motorcycle to a stationary object.
  • Check on your motorcycle.
  • Lock the forks and brakes of your motorcycle.
  • Install a “kill” switch that only you know how to disengage.

Using these tips, you can do a better job of ensuring that your motorcycle is safe from would-be carjackers. When it comes to security, Accurate Locksmith in Ramsey is unmatched and unparalleled in the field. Talk to an expert today.
