A Glossary of Locksmith Terms

While our experts can always make sure you come out with what you wanted, here is a list of some basic lock and locksmith terms that can make searching for keys, safes or keyless entries much easier.
  • Blade – the part of the key that goes into the door.
  • Bored Cylindrical Lock – the most common (standard) kind of residential lock.
  • Chamber – the holes where springs and pins must be pushed into the unlock position.
  • Control Key – the type of key used by a locksmith to remove the cylinder and re-key.
  • Cutting a Key – making a new key by cutting with lasers or machinery into an unused blade.
  • Deadbolt – a lock that is engaged through turning a knob.
  • Key Blank – a cut before it is cut.
  • Key Way – the hole where a key is inserted into a lock.
  • Re-key – resetting the tumbler so that the lock is opened with a new key.
  • Transponder Key – a key with a microchip that is often used for cars. The chip controls the functionality of the key,
  • Tumbler – the mechanism which must be moved before a lock opens. Turning a key in the lock engages the tumbler to grant you access.
